5.27.09 ~ Be Crafty, A Tutorial!

Time for more Craftyness!

I love headbands and how they look in my hair, but hate how they give me a headache after about 10 minutes and dig into the tender place right behind my ears. What? You too?! Well, I have found the answer and it only takes 5 minutes and some scraps of fabric, interfacing and elastic to create a customized original reversible headband! Ready to give it a try? Here we go....

Gather your scraps. You'll need two pieces about 2-3 inches wide and 10-12 inches long, one piece of interfaces the same size and a piece of 1/4-1/2 inch elastic about 10 inches long (depending on your head size).

Iron your scraps and fuse the piece of interfacing to the wrong side on one of the scraps - it doesn't matter which one.

Pin the scraps together with right sides facing each other. Draw out the shape you would like your headband to be. I went for a rectangular shape that tapers at the ends, whatever shape you choose it needs to taper at the ends.

Cut out your headband shape and sew along sides, NOT the ends. Leave the ends open.

Turn your headband right side out - this is the most tedious part! Then tuck in the ends and iron your headband flat. Be sure to iron the tucked in ends flat so they will stay when you go to the next step.

Tuck one end of the elastic into the turned in end of your headband. Sew along the bottom 2-3 times to hold the stitch.

Wrap the headband around your head pulling the loose end of the elastic around to find the length that feels right on your head. Cut the elastic at that point, tuck it in and sew across the edge as you did with the other end. Ta Da!!! You're done! Now go sport your adorable reversible and comfortable headband!
